How to Make Sweet Pickle Eggs – A Festive Treat!

Pickle eggs are a delightful combination of tangy and sweet, making them a versatile Southern snack that’s perfect for holiday gifting. In this post, I’ll walk you through the process of making sweet pickle eggs, decorating them for the season, and preparing them as thoughtful homemade gifts. Keep refrigerated!

Ingredients for Sweet Pickle Eggs:

  • Hard-boiled eggs (quantity based on the size of your jars)
  • Sweet brine:
    • 1/2 Sweet, Yellow Onion, thinly sliced in rings.
    • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 – 1.5 cups sugar, depending on taste
    • 1 teaspoon celery seeds
    • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard seeds
    • 1 teaspoon regular salt
    • Optional: A pinch of red pepper flakes for a mild kick

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Sweet Brine

Combine apple cider vinegar, water, sugar, and pickling spices in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Simmer for 5 minutes to allow the spices to infuse. Set aside to cool.


2. Boil the Eggs

Place your eggs in a pot and cover them with cold water. Bring the water to a rolling boil and let it cook for 10 minutes. Once the time is up, immediately remove the pot from the stove and proceed to the next step.


3. Shock the Eggs

To ensure easy peeling, transfer the eggs to a bowl and run cold water over them until they are cool to the touch. This “shocking” step stops the cooking process and prevents the yolks from overcooking and to peel easier.


4. Peel the Eggs

Carefully peel the eggs, ensuring no shell fragments remain. Rinse them if needed.


5. Assemble the Pickle Jars

Place the peeled eggs into clean, dry jars. If gifting, smaller jars work beautifully for individual servings or small batches. Once the brine has cooled, pour it over the eggs in the jars, ensuring the eggs are fully submerged.


6. Marinate

Seal the jars tightly and refrigerate them. For the best flavor, allow the eggs to marinate for at least 3 days. The longer they soak, the sweeter and more flavorful they become.


Gifting the Jars:

Now that your sweet pickle eggs are ready, it’s time to turn them into festive gifts. Here’s how to add a touch of holiday cheer:

  1. Spray Paint the Lids
    Use Gloss Meadow Green by Rust-Oleum (or any festive color) to spray-paint the lids. Allow them to dry completely before assembling the jars.
  2. Add a Bow
    Wrap the jar lids with red glitter mesh or ribbon and tie it into a neat bow. This small touch transforms the jars into a cheerful, Christmas-ready gift.
