How to Make a Raggedy Rabbit Applique Sweatshirt
DIY Rag Rabbit Sweatshirt: Cozy, Cute, and Oh-So-Easy!
Looking for a cozy project that’s perfect for Easter? This rag rabbit sweatshirt (or tee!) is just the thing! It’s soft, cute, and has that rustic, farmhouse charm we love. Plus, it’s super simple to make—even if you’re new to sewing! Let me walk you through the steps.
What You’ll Need:
- Fabric print of your choice (rabbit pattern provided) 1/2 yard
- Flannel fabric (three layers)
- Faux Fur trim
- Sweatshirt or tee shirt
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- Pattern (included)
Step 1: Cut Out Your Rabbit Shape
Start by cutting out the rabbit shape from your chosen fabric print. Make sure you use sharp fabric scissors for clean edges. The rabbit pattern I’m using is just the right size to make a statement without overwhelming the shirt!
Step 2: Layer the Flannel
Next, cut three layers of flannel fabric using the same rabbit pattern. Stack the layers neatly, making sure they line up well.
Step 3: Sew the Layers Together
Pin the layers together to keep them from shifting. Sew around the edge of the rabbit shape about 1/4″ from the edge. This stitching will give your rag rabbit that signature frayed look after washing.
Step 4: Attach to the Sweatshirt
Place your sewn rabbit applique onto the front of your sweatshirt or tee shirt. Carefully sew it in place, stitching exactly on the same line that you used to sew the rabbit layers together. This step keeps everything secure and looking neat.
Fluffy Tail: Find a lid or something round that is the size you want the bunny tail. Trace the circle, cut it out. Attach to applique with zig zag stitching.
Step 5: Wash and Dry
Now for the fun part! To achieve that perfectly frayed, cozy look, wash your sweatshirt on a delicate cycle, cold water, turned inside out. Then machine dry. The frayed edges give it a well-loved, rustic feel that’s so charming!
Pro Tips:
- Always turn your sweatshirt inside out when washing to preserve the fray and avoid excess wear.
- Delicate cycle works best to keep everything intact.
- Experiment with different fabrics and colors for seasonal variations!
I love how unique each one turns out! Whether you’re making one for yourself or as a gift, this rag rabbit sweatshirt is sure to become a favorite. Be sure to share your finished project—I’d love to see your creations!
Happy sewing!
